SASSA Grant-in-Aid

If you are a beneficiary of the SASSA Older Persons Grant, War Veterans Grant, or Disability Grant, you may qualify for the SASSA Grant-in-Aid, which provides additional financial support.

This grant is intended for individuals who are unable to care for themselves due to a physical or mental disability and require assistance. The funds help beneficiaries hire a caregiver to assist with daily needs, ensuring proper care and well-being.

Who Is Eligible for the SASSA Grant-in-Aid in 2025?

You may qualify for the Grant-in-Aid if all of the following conditions apply:

Receiving a Qualifying Social Grant

You must already receive one of the following:

  • Disability Grant
  • War Veterans Grant
  • Older Persons Grant

Not Living in a State-Funded Institution

You must not live in a state-funded institution that provides care or accommodation.

Unable to Care for Yourself

You are unable to look after yourself due to a mental or physical disability.

Need for Ongoing Assistance

You require regular or full-time assistance with daily activities.

Citizenship or Residency

You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident living in South Africa.

Medical Proof of Need

You must provide medical evidence, such as a doctor’s certificate, confirming:

  • Your condition
  • Your need for ongoing care

How to Apply for the SASSA Grant-in-Aid

After submitting your application, you can check your SASSA status online to see whether your Grant-in-Aid application has been approved, declined, or is still being processed.

Step 1: Visit Your Nearest SASSA Office

Visit your nearest SASSA office during official working hours. It is recommended to contact the office beforehand to confirm any specific requirements.

Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

Bring the following documents with you:

  • 13-digit barcoded ID or Smart ID Card (original and certified copy)
  • Marriage certificate (if married)
  • Medical report confirming disability and need for full-time care
  • Proof of residence (utility bill, lease agreement, or official letter)
  • Proof of income and assets (if applicable)
  • Banking details (bank statement or bank letter)
  • Affidavit or written declaration explaining:
    • Why you need the Grant-in-Aid
    • Who assists you with daily care

Step 3: Complete the Application Form

Request the Grant-in-Aid application form at the SASSA office and complete it accurately.

Step 4: Submit the Application

Submit the completed form together with all required documents to a SASSA official. Additional questions may be asked for verification purposes.

Step 5: Receive Proof of Submission

Request a receipt or acknowledgment as proof that your application has been submitted.

Step 6: Wait for Feedback

SASSA may conduct a home verification visit. You will be notified if your application is approved or declined. If approved, payment details will be provided.

What If Your Grant-in-Aid Application Is Declined?

If your application is declined, you have the right to appeal within 90 days of receiving the decision.

Step 1: Understand the Reason for Rejection

Review the decline notice carefully. You may contact or visit your nearest SASSA office for clarification if needed.

Step 2: Prepare an Appeal

Your appeal letter should include:

  • Full name and ID number
  • Contact details
  • Reference to the declined application
  • Explanation of why the decision was incorrect
  • Supporting evidence

Attach copies of:

  • Your ID document
  • The decline notification
  • Updated medical or financial documents (if applicable)

Step 3: Submit the Appeal

Appeals must be submitted to the Minister of Social Development. Ask your nearest SASSA office about official submission options. Keep copies of all documents and request acknowledgment.

Step 4: Appeal Review

Appeals may take several weeks to a few months to be reviewed. Follow up with SASSA if necessary.

Step 5: Appeal Outcome

  • Approved: You will receive grant and payment details
  • Declined again: You may escalate the case to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA)
