SASSA War Veterans Grant

The SASSA War Veterans Grant is a financial support program designed for veterans who served in World War II or the Korean War. This grant provides monthly financial assistance to help eligible veterans meet their basic needs. Managed by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), the program aims to honor and support those who contributed to these historical military efforts. Applicants must meet eligibility criteria, including age, service history, and residency in South Africa, to qualify for this grant.

Who Qualifies for SASSA War Veterans Grant in South Africa?

These are the eligibility criteria for the  SASSA War Veterans Grant in South Africa:

  • The applicant must have fought in either World War II (1939–1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953).
  • Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident living in South Africa.
  • The applicant should not receive any other kind of social grant.
  • The applicant must be 60 years or older, or be disabled.
  • Should not be earning more than R8,070 per month (R96,840 per year) if single and R16,140 per month (R193,680 per year) if married.
  • Pass the means test.
  • The applicant should not be receiving any kind of care or assistance in any state-funded institution.

SASSA War Veterans Grant Payout for 2025

The SASSA War Veterans Grant is a monthly financial grant provided by SASSA to eligible military veterans. If approved for this grant, recipients currently receive R2,200 per month to support their living expenses. This grant is designed to acknowledge the contributions of veterans who served in recognized military operations, including World War II and the Korean War, and to assist them in maintaining a basic standard of living. 

To qualify, applicants must meet specific requirements such as verified military service, South African residency, and an assessment of financial need. The application process involves submitting necessary documentation, including proof of service, personal identification, and income details, to confirm eligibility. Payments are made directly to the recipient’s bank account or through approved payment methods, ensuring a reliable and consistent financial lifeline for eligible veterans.

How to Apply for SASSA War Veterans Grant?

  • Visit the SASSA Office
    • To apply for the SASSA War Veterans Grant, you must go to the nearest SASSA office. If you are unable to visit the office due to age or disability, you can send someone else to submit the application on your behalf.
  • Obtain the Application Form
    • Once at the SASSA office, ask the officer for the SASSA War Veterans Grant application form. The officer will provide you with the necessary paperwork.
  • Fill Out the Application Form
    • Complete the form by providing your personal details, military service history, and any other relevant information. If you need assistance, the SASSA officer will help you fill out the form.
  • Attach the Required Documents
    • Ensure that you attach all the necessary documents, including your proof of military service, identity documents, and any additional paperwork required for eligibility. Double-check to ensure all documents are correctly attached.
  • Submit Your Application
    • After filling out the form and attaching the documents, submit your completed application to the officer at the SASSA office. The officer will confirm that everything is in order.

Once your application is submitted, SASSA will process your request and notify you of the outcome. If approved, you will begin receiving the SASSA War Veterans Grant payments.

What Are Deceased Military Veterans Benefits?

Deceased military veterans’ benefits provide support to the families or dependents of veterans who have passed away. These benefits include:

  • Funeral Assistance
    • The government may provide financial support for funeral expenses to help cover the cost of the veteran’s burial.
  • Pension for Dependents
    • Eligible dependents may receive a monthly pension if the veteran was receiving a military pension or grant before passing.
  • Medical Benefits
    • Dependents may continue to access medical benefits through the Department of Military Veterans if the veteran is enrolled in healthcare services.
  • Educational Benefits
    • Children or spouses of deceased veterans may receive financial support for education, including tuition fees and study allowances.
  • Grants for Special Needs
    • Dependents with special needs may receive additional support to help with care and other services.
