What Is the SASSA Care Dependency Grant?

The SASSA Care Dependency Grant is a social assistance grant provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). It is meant to support caregivers responsible for children with severe disabilities. This grant provides relief to families who need extra financial assistance to manage the medical and day-to-day care of these children.

Who Qualifies for a Care Dependency Grant?

To qualify for the Care Dependency Grant, both the caregiver and the child must meet specific criteria:

  • Age of the Child: The child must be under 18 years old.
  • Relation with Child: You must be either a foster parent, primary caregiver, or a parent of a child to apply for this grant.
  • Disability Verification: A certified medical practitioner must confirm that the child has a severe disability requiring permanent care or support.
  • Financial Means Test: Single applicants must earn less than R223,200 per year. Married applicants must have a combined household income below R446,400 per year.
  • Residency Status: Both the caregiver and the child must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees living in South Africa.

How Much is the Grant?

The grant amount is currently R2,180 per month (subject to periodic adjustments). While this may not cover all expenses, it helps ease the financial strain on caregivers.

Why is this Grant Important?

Raising a child with severe disabilities is a full-time responsibility. From medical appointments to specialized equipment, the costs can quickly add up. This grant ensures that caregivers have financial support to provide the best possible care, giving children a chance to thrive despite their challenges.

Why the Care Dependency Grant Matters

The Care Dependency Grant is more than just financial support—it helps families caring for children with severe disabilities manage daily and medical needs. It acknowledges the challenges they face and offers meaningful support to make life a little easier.

If you think you might qualify, visit your nearest SASSA office and apply. The process might take time, but the difference it can make for you and your child is worth every step.
